Mad Diver prepares for Underwater Mile

A MAD diver is preparing to take the plunge for Sport Relief 2012 by doing an underwater mile on an exercise bike.

Pete Hodkin, 52, from Plum Tree Road in Lower Stondon, has raised more than £500 in sponsorship for this quirky challenge.

Pete, a member of Mid Herts Divers in Welwyn Garden City, will join nine other team members, including his son Daniel, for the event which will take place on Saturday March 24 at a disused brick quarry called Gildenburgh Water near Peterborough.

The divers will have to jump into the water in pairs, descend six metres to a platform where two exercise bikes will be secured before removing their fins and cycling a mile.

Pete, who is also the Training Officer at Mid Herts Divers said: “My son Daniel came up with the mad idea of cycling underwater. So, we took one of the exercise bikes to Gildenburgh and gave it a go.

“It may sound pretty easy but once we had all of our diving gear on, our movement was restricted and cycling was hard work. To top it all off the water temperature was no more than six degrees.”

Pete previously ran the Sport Relief Mile in Milton Keynes with Mid Herts Divers in 2010 wearing full scuba gear and this year the club have decided to take it one step further by organising their own underwater mile.

A lot of planning has been involved in the challenge. Members have worked tirelessly to find old exercise bikes, find a way of securing them underwater and drumming up support for the team.

“The Underwater Mile would not be possible without the hard work of everyone involved,” added Pete.

“It’ll all be worth it to raise money for such a good cause.”

I enjoy scuba diving, but never have I heard of underwater cycling - this sounds brilliant!

This sounds dangerous - but probably that's what makes it fun! All the best!

I wonder if I'd ever try something like this myself.
