Two Taekwon-Do athletes from the Hitchin Taekwon-Do School travelled to Canada recently for the International Taekwon-Do Federation World championships. Gemma O’Connor (18) who lives in Bassingbourn is a member of the Adult Female England team came home with two silver medals one for sparring and one for patterns. Tom McNelliey (15) from Hitchin is a member of the Junior Male England team took silver in the power event. Both just missed out on individual medals having some tough fights against the top fighters in the world. This achievement doesn’t happen overnight; they have been travelling every Saturday to the national squad training in Bristol for the last 6 months training with all the top competitors in the country. This, as well as training four times a week at the Hitchin club and maintaining their own training of running and strength work in the gym has been tough but all worth it. To get to the World Championships alone is a great achievement and then to be part of the England team and come home with some medals is an outstanding achievement, well done to them both.
