About 50-60 people, members and their paying guests, meet once a month on a Thursday evening to enjoy a glass of wine and a chat with their friends. Each month we have a professional presenter who provides the wines, tells us about their region of origin, how the wines were made and other interesting details. There is always an opportunity to ask questions. At each wine tasting we taste small samples of eight wines of which 2 or 3 are usually white and the rest are red. To make the tasting more enjoyable, a range of nibbles consisting of breads, biscuits, mild cheeses, patés, crisps and the like, is also provided. The monthly wine tasting is an informal and relaxed occasion and although we have members who are very knowledgeable about wine, we do not have any wine snobs. Throughout the course of the year we will taste many wines from all around the world. Each year we also have two Wine Dinners for about 50 members and their guests when a three-course meal with wine is enjoyed at the Welwyn Garden City Golf Club. At the end of November we have an Annual Wine Fair for about 120 members and their guests at which we can sample about 50 wines and enjoy a three-course meal. This is held in the Woolmer Green Village Hall and is much enjoyed by all those attending. Membership of the Welwyn Wine Society is open to all persons over the age of 18 years.
