10 members of Jackie’s Drop In ,a day centre for adults with learning difficulties, joined Spring Clean Letchworth on Saturday to litter pick hotspots in the town. They collected a full bag of rubbish each.
This was part of a town wide event with 20 teams taking part. So far 185 people have turned out and together they have filled 110 bags of rubbish, of which 31 or more have been recycled. Three teams have still to go out.
Congratulations to all those residents, clubs and community groups who took part, your hard work paid off not only was it a job well done but you are also now part of a record breaking litter picking team! And to judge by the pictures, you had a lot of fun.
We don't drop £5 notes, but who wants a sweet paper or crisp bag once all of the crisps have been eaten? Among the most unusual litter found this year was a teddy bear found by Letchworth 12th Scouts, a shoe found by Ridge Rovers and a broken play station found by Jackie's Drop In, A plastic sword found by the Boys and Boys and Girls Brigade.
Spring Clean Letchworth stated that As usual there were lots of cigarette butts, sweet papers and empty crisp bags and in some parts lots of doggy doo! On the whole the town is much cleaner than in previous years but we actually found some filthy hotspots.
and as one Guides Leader commented " The girls were genuinely surprised at all the litter collected. Especially Cans and bottles"
All in all a great event. Some Letchworth Schools have still to go out and will be litter picking at the end of June.
If only we could get people to stop dropping litter and keep it this way!
